IMPOSSIBLE CITY

This is a secret closed to the public site deep in the middle of the “Range Areas” of the base. The Army realized that warfare in the future was going to change to some urban settings. This site called the Impossible City was built in the 1980’s to train the Infantry in urban tactics. These buildings are unique, gray and unpainted with very sturdy cement block construction. Some of the building are built around circular court yards and some of the surrounding walls are low and somewhat reminiscent of we see in the Middle East and other foreign countries. These buildings apparently had pop-up targets and reminded me of a huge Hollywood movie set, except the issues here were serious and not so much for entertainment. If this site is still standing in the year 3000, a future archaeologist will find this a strange place indeed.

Special access for me was made possible through the Ft. Ord BRAC offices by Dr. Stephen Payne, Command Historian. He also has provided invaluable help to me at the Historical Fort Ord Archive Center.
